Join DOTA for a one-hour live webinar (1 CEU) on Burnout within the Occupational Therapy Profession, presented by Dr. Eileen Scanlon, OTD, MBA, OTR/L, CHT, Assistant Professor and Hybrid Admissions Coordinator for the Medical University of South Carolina's Occupational Therapy Program.

Burnout

Burnout is defined as a state of emotional exhaustion, energy depletion, disengagement, negativity, and decreased productivity as a result of environmental demands exceeding capacity (Park, 2021: World Health Organization, 2019). Within occupational therapy, burnout is relatively common and is linked to significant consequences for health, mental and emotional well-being, and professional reputation (Lynner,2025). This course will explore how contemporary environmental demands contribute to burnout, explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying burnout and review evidence-based strategies for prevention and mitigation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the signs of burnout
  2. Explore the neurobiological mechanisms underlying burnout
  3. Analyze the impact of burnout on individual practitioners and the occupational therapy profession.
  4. Apply evidence-based strategies for preventing and addressing burnout in occupational therapy practitioners through case-based examples.
