Occupational
therapy was founded on the philosophical belief that occupation and health are reciprocally related and evidence
supports the notion that occupation-based approaches yield better client outcomes. While many professional leaders and theories encourage
practitioners to employ occupation-based approaches, there
is no mechanism to determine if we have achieved the goal of occupation-centeredness. A
new model, presented in this session, was created to conceptualize what occupation-based practice looks like. The
Dynamic Model of Occupation-Based
Practice depicts the four main constructs of occupation-based practice,
the factors influencing the use of occupation in practice, and
situates therapeutic interactions along a continuum between
occupation-based practice and models that are discretely different from
'health through occupation'. The
model served as the foundation for the development of an
assessment tool to quantify the extent of occupation infused in each therapeutic interaction with a client. The
assessment can establish baselines and capture change in practice to
assist practitioners, administrators, faculty, and students facilitate
the use of occupation to
align with the profession's core values.Attendees
will have the opportunity to view clinical scenarios to assess the sample practice and reflect on their own practice.
This virtual event will be free for DOTA members and
cost $10 for non-members.
