The difference between OTR and COTA

Roles and Responsibilities


OTR

COTA

Evaluation

OTR initiates and directs the evaluation, interprets data and develops the intervention plan.


-COTA completes delegated assessments.

-Verbal and written reports of observations and client’s capabilities.


Intervention Planning


OTR is responsible for the overall development of intervention plan.


-Collaborates with OTR and client.

-Be knowledgeable of results of evaluation.

-Provides input.

Intervention Implementation


-Overall responsibility.

-Delegates & provides appropriate supervision.


-Knowledgeable of client's goals.

-Selects, implements and makes modifications to interventions considering:

-Competencies

-Client’s goals

-Requirements of practice setting.

Intervention Review


OTR determines the need for continuing, modifying or discontinuing OT services.


COTA contributes to this process:

-Provides information about client’s response to intervention. Relays any communication during therapy sessions.

Targeting & Evaluating Outcomes

OTR responsible for selecting, measuring and interpreting client outcomes.


-OTA needs to be knowledgeable of the client's expected outcomes.

-Share information about client's achievement of these outcomes.

-May implement outcome measurements.

-Provide client discharge resources.
